What is the difference between ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise?
Both plans keep your data out of OpenAI model training by default, and both have completed SOC 2 Type 2 audits. ChatGPT Business is the self-serve plan for small and growing teams, with SAML single sign-on, MFA and admin roles. ChatGPT Enterprise is bought through OpenAI sales and adds SCIM provisioning, custom role-based access, a Compliance API audit log and, for eligible customers, data residency.
What both plans share
OpenAI states that by default it does not use data from ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu or its API platform, including inputs and outputs, to train or improve its models. It also states that you own your inputs and outputs where allowed by law, that business data is encrypted with AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.2 or higher in transit, and that it can sign a Data Processing Addendum for ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Enterprise and the API.
So the choice between the two is not about whether your prompts train a public model. It is about identity management, auditability, data location and scale.
What ChatGPT Business gives you
OpenAI describes Business as a self-serve, dedicated workspace for small and growing businesses. Its listed controls include:
- SAML single sign-on and multifactor authentication.
- Three roles: Member, Admin and Owner.
- Controls to enable or disable third-party GPTs, and basic usage analytics.
- Admins who can view, access, export and delete members' conversations in the workspace.
- Admin control over retention, with deleted or unsaved conversations removed from OpenAI systems within 30 days unless longer retention is required by law or needed to prevent harm.
What ChatGPT Enterprise adds
Enterprise is purchased at the organization level through OpenAI's sales team, and seat types and billing depend on your agreement. OpenAI lists everything in Business plus:
- SCIM, so your identity provider can create and remove accounts automatically.
- Custom role-based access by group, including permissions for connected tools and workspace agents.
- The Enterprise Compliance API, which gives admins an audit log of conversations and GPTs.
- Centralized spend controls and user-level analytics.
- Microsoft Intune support on iOS and iPadOS for app protection and conditional access.
- Data residency for eligible customers, storing content at rest in regions OpenAI lists, including the U.S. and Europe.
Health data and other regulated information
OpenAI says it offers a Business Associate Agreement to ChatGPT for Healthcare and API healthcare customers. It does not list a BAA for standard ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, so treat protected health information as out of bounds on those plans unless your contract says otherwise. Controlled unclassified information and export-controlled data need the same caution: confirm the environment is authorized for that data before anyone uses it.
How to choose
Business usually fits a smaller team that wants a governed workspace quickly and can manage users by hand. Enterprise fits when you need automatic provisioning and de-provisioning from your identity provider, an audit trail you can feed into compliance tools, custom roles by department, or data stored in a specific region. OpenAI changes plan features and pricing often, so confirm current terms with OpenAI before you buy, and record them in your vendor review.
Common follow-up questions
Does OpenAI train on ChatGPT Business data?
Not by default. OpenAI states it does not use inputs or outputs from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu or the API platform to train its models unless the customer explicitly opts in. Personal ChatGPT accounts are treated differently, which is why company data belongs on a business plan.
Can admins read employees' ChatGPT conversations?
On ChatGPT Business, OpenAI says workspace admins can view, access, export and delete members' conversations. On Enterprise, users see their own conversations and admins can access an audit log of conversations and GPTs through the Enterprise Compliance API. Tell employees this in your AI policy.
Does ChatGPT Enterprise include API access?
No. OpenAI states that a ChatGPT Enterprise workspace and an API Platform organization are separate membership systems. Being in the workspace does not make someone a member of your API organization, so each needs its own access management and offboarding.
